About the 5008

Peugeot began manufacturing the 5008 in 2009. In its first iteration, the 5008 was a compact multi-purpose vehicle or MPV, but later saw a classification change to a mid-size crossover SUV in 2017.

Although the two generations sit in different vehicle classes, they are both front-engine front-wheel-drive 5-door cars.

The first generation of the 5008 was released towards the end of 2009. It then received a facelift in 2013. At its release, the 5008 shares many structural similarities to the Peugeot 3008, its SUV sibling.

The 5008 received the 2010 Multi-Purpose Vehicle of the Year Award from What Car?

Along with the refreshed styling, the 5008 also received an updated lineup of engine configurations.

The first-generation offered petrol engines in two 1.6-liter variants, with options for turbochargers. The facelift engine brought a 1.2-liter Puretech option in 2014. Diesel options included 1.6-liter and 2.0-liter engines, with hybrid technology.

These were mated with a 5- or 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic, depending on the size of the engine.

The second-generation 5008 saw the Peugeot change completely into the midsize crossover SUV. At this point, the 5008 was changed to a 3-row capable of seating seven passengers. The change was largely a result of SUVs becoming far more popular than the outdated MPV class.

Changes to the 5008 included a more rugged-looking exterior, raised height, and increased carrying capacity.

The second generation of the 5008 faces competition from similar brands in the midsize SUV class, most notably its cousin the Citroën C4, Nissan X-Trail, and the excellent Škoda Kodiaq.

The gearbox received an update with the second generation, now offering 5- and 6-speed manuals, as well as 6- and 8-speed automatic transmissions.
