About the Kodiaq

In a world that is steadily turning away from minivans and wagons, the SUV is now truly supreme. The difference, of course, is that now the term “SUV” can mean so many things. The Skoda Kodiaq is an example of a mid-size crossover SUV that takes the best features of Skoda’s much-loved sedan and hatchback range, and enlarges it into a more family-friendly SUV frame.

The Kodiaq was first launched in 2016, and is placed within their range above the Kamiq and Karoq compact crossover SUV models. Within its corporate Volkswagen family, it’s more closely related to the VW Tiguan Allspace, as well as the SEAT Tarraco. It’s still within its first generation, and was facelifted in 2021.

Besides size and scale, the Skoda Kodiaq also wins points as a family-friendly vehicle thanks to its Euro NCAP 5-star safety score. That’s a big plus in a market where people are wary of SUVs for past safety failings. Further kudos came their way as they were named “Best Family Car in the World” by Top Gear Magazine in November 2016.

The Kodiaq is powered by a range of gasoline engines from 1.4L to 2.0L displacement, as well as a collection of 2.0L turbo diesel engines on offer in select markets, especially in Europe. In its most powerful form, it can reach up to 237-hp (turbo diesel, 217-hp gasoline), and 369 lb-ft of torque. Most drivetrains also offer 4Motion AWD technology, as well as VW’s 7-speed direct-shift gearbox technology.

The interior is spacious and well-appointed, with decent-quality materials and an absence of cheap plastic. Drivers also like the inclusion of real buttons around the infotainment system, which makes operation easier while driving. Available extras include a digital instrument cluster, alternative upholstery, and a Canton premium sound system.
