About the C4 Cactus

The Citroen C4 Cactus is a special subcompact crossover SUV that was initially manufactured in Spain for the European market, and for export to Latin America. Since 2018, however, most production has been happening in Porto Real in Rio, Brazil, with production finally ending in Spain as of May 2020. The name “Cactus” may seem unique and curious, but when seeing the unique “AirBump” side panels of the C4 Cactus, it all becomes clear.

While the C4 Cactus was initially built on the PSA PF1 platform which was normally used for smaller SUVs, it is considered one step up from the likes of the Citroen C3 and DS 3. The idea behind the “AirBumps” was to create a protective cactus-like layer on the sides of the car to prevent damage from occurring at low speeds in parking lots.

A major facelift in 2018 took away the explicit AirBumps side panel design, instead making them a lot more subtle. This helped to present the C4 Cactus as more of a hatchback option in the European market rather than an SUV. New features indeed assisted emergency braking, lane departure warning, sign recognition, automatic parking assist, and blindspot monitoring. In Latin America, it’s still marketed as a compact crossover SUV.

In Europe, the Citroen C4 Cactus enjoyed success, including in the UK, with drivers generally loving its quirky but stylish design, but most of all its affordable price point. Even in “rip-off Britain” it was sold at a starting price of around $15,000. Buyers also didn’t have to climb too high up the trim ladder to get a good mixture of features.

The interior was complimented as roomy when it came to knee room, but a bit tight for taller passengers when it came to headroom. There’s also no split in the rear seat which makes lowering it to load up the car with cargo a bit of a pain. For many, however, these setbacks weren’t enough to deter buyers eager for a great bargain.
