About the CT

The Lexus CT is a hybrid electric premium compact hatchback where the first model (CT 200h) was based on the Prius and Toyota MC Platform chassis.

As Lexus’ first hybrid premium compact hatch, the CT uses a spindle grille and was first introduced at the 2010 Geneva motor show. Specifically created for the European market, Lexus trademarked the name and installed a 1.8-liter VVT 4 cylinder petrol engine that was also used in the Auris and Prius, and produced 98 bhp.

Lexus uses the MacPherson strut suspension, designed by Earle S. MacPherson. Earle MacPherson was the chief engineer of the Chevrolet Light Car project in 1945.

With four drive modes; Normal, Sport, Eco and EV, the CT had the Lexus safety package to include dynamic radar cruise control, a pre-collision system, 8 airbags and vehicle stability control.

2013 saw a facelift with a change to the outward styling and a larger spindle grille.

For the USA market, Lexus offered the ‘F Sport package’ which could be considered slightly misleading as alterations were only made to the aesthetics with no change in engine performance. This limited edition had a short run and ended in 2017.

The Lexus CT won numerous awards during its lifetime, receiving ‘best small car over £35,000 in 2011,’ by ‘Australia’s best car,’ and global sales reached 267,000 making it the second best-selling Lexus hybrid just after the Lexus RX 400h/RX 450h.

German manufacturers provided the usual competition with their economical diesel engines, namely the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class.

Where emissions were comparatively low on all these vehicles, customers who were seriously economically minded had the choice of a BMW i3, VW e-Golf or the Audi e-Tron (although somewhat more expensive).
