About the DS 3 Crossback
The DS 3 Crossback was the ultimate replacement for the Citroen DS 3, which dropped the “Citroen” from its name in 2016 after DS became a standalone brand independent from Citroen, and was then discontinued altogether in 2019. The DS 3 Crossback was built to help the DS 3 name compete in the newer and now fiercest automotive market segment of them all: the subcompact SUV crossover.
The DS 3 Crossback competes in the higher-end luxury segment against the likes of the Audi Q2, BMW X1, Mini Countryman, and so on. The DS 3 Crossback is the first DS vehicle that was built on the PSA EMP1 platform that’s also used for the Peugeot 208. January 2020 saw a battery-electric version join the lineup, known as the E-Tense.
DS has kept the powertrain lineup for this model fairly straightforward, including a 1.2L 3-cylinder gasoline unit, and a 1.5L 4-cylinder diesel offering. The gasoline model tops out at 155-hp when using the 155 Automatic variant, with 177 lb-ft of torque. There’s only one variant of the diesel engine, delivering 102-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.
While many point to the similarities between the DS 3 Crossback and the C3 Aircross --- and there are connections --- the DS version has a more distinctive and edge exterior design. The DS brand has become known for its larger, more dominant front grille designs, as well as angular lines, especially around the headlights.
On the road, it’s common for people to underestimate the DS 3 Crossback because of its relatively low power output, especially in the entry-level powertrains. However, despite this, and having an SUV frame, the Crossback handles itself very well even on tight and twisty roads.
Those who opt for an entry-level model will also likely not be disappointed with the 7-inch touchscreen offering, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, lane keep assist, emergency braking, and even traffic sign recognition. If you go for a higher trim, you’ll get leather seats, navigation and a 10-inch touchscreen thrown in.
