About the Tiguan

The Volkswagen Tiguan was released to compete with a growing and increasingly competitive crossover SUV segment. The Tiguan competes with just about every OEM with their own equivalent from the revived Ford Bronco to the Hyundai Tucson, Mazda CX-5 and Toyota RAV4. It’s easily the most cut-throat segment out there with people all over the world clamoring to replace old family cars with trendy new crossovers.

The VW Tiguan certainly has a lot to offer buyers. A starting price well under $30,000 for the base model is a good starting point, even while the Tiguan beats out most competitors in handling and cabin space, and its long-wheelbase version even offers a third seating row. It comes in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. At the very top end, the starting price stays comfortably below $40,000.

The Tiguan is powered by a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine delivering up to 184-hp. It’s not the most powerful engine in its segment, but the Tiguan performs admirably and will hold its own well in the city or on the highway. Acceleration is a little slow off the mark --- 0-60 in 9.1 seconds --- but fast acceleration isn’t necessarily why people first look at the Tiguan.

The VW Tiguan interior offers simple comfort and solid quality. Climb the trim levels and you can unlock faux-leather seating, a power sunroof, a 10.3-inch digital instrument cluster and more. Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are all standard, with the option of a Fender premium audio system in the higher trim levels, too.

The third seating row is a terrific addition for those who need the extra seating but don’t want to buy a massive (and far more expensive) SUV to get it. It cuts down cargo space to just 12 cubic feet, but on days you don’t need the third row, you can push it back up to 33 cubic feet, and 65 cubic feet with all the seats down.
