About the Forester

The first Subaru Forester models went into production in 1997 for the 1998 model year.

They were the Japanese company's first crossover SUV, classed as a compact crossover due to their size.

Underneath the Forester was the same chassis used under the Impreza, essentially making it a tall, SUV-like version of the popular compact car.

It launched at the start of the birth of the crossover SUV segment alongside the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4.

What set the Forester apart from the rest was its incredibly low center of gravity which didn't just help the car perform better around corners but was also safer.

So much safer was the Forester than the rest, it didn't have to display a rollover risk warning in the cabin unlike its competitors the CR-V and the RAV4.

Subaru used the engines from the Impreza and the permanent four-wheel-drive system too which was a huge hit.

Many crossover SUVs were being sold with front-wheel-drive only to help reduce weight and improve fuel efficiency.

For the year 2000 Subaru introduced a high-performance version of the car called the STi that boasted an electric blue paint job.

Many of the components used in the construction of the STi version were improved including a smaller ratio steering rack for more responsive turns.

In terms of performance, the STi could reach 60 miles per hour in 5.2 seconds and had a top speed of 140 miles per hour.

In 2002 a second-generation Forester hit the roads which saw only subtle changes made to the exterior to modernize it.

An XT performance trim was added to the car which used the 2.5-liter turbocharged engine found in the Impreza WRX.

2008 brought the third generation Forester into showrooms and now the car was wildly different than before.

Subaru moved the line away from the recognizable boxy design that it had before and allowed it to blend into the market.

This design then continued with the move into its fourth generation in 2012 and then in 2018 too.

The 2018 model did see the car start to return back to its old boxy self slightly, with a taller body profile but with modern design tweaks.
