About the Justy

Built as a subcompact hatchback, the Justy is a little car manufactured by the Japanese car manufacturer Subaru.

Its first generation was both designed and made in Japan between 1984 and 1994 and was fundamentally a widened and stretched-out version of the Rex Kei Car.

With an engine sized under 1000cc, the Justy made use of the benefits of having a small engine under the tax laws in Japan.

Initially, Subaru limited production to just 500 units per month due to a shortfall in steel bands.

The Justy was available in both a low and high-top roof for the European and American markets from 1987.

Rebadged as the ‘Subaru Trendy’ in some countries, the Justy had code names related to the engine size, so J10 represented 1-liter and the J12 was used for the 1.2-liter version.

Four-wheel drive versions were sold to a number of countries, although not available in some, and either manual transmission or continually variable transmission could be purchased, both of which came in either front-wheel drive or 4-wheel drive.

Although not a fast vehicle, this didn’t impact sales in Japan, where most people bought this vehicle for city driving, a speed above 30 mph was rarely achieved or allowed.

In Europe, in 1994, the Justy was actually a rebadged 2nd generation Suzuki Cultus which was made at the Suzuki plant in Esztergom in Hungary. These were available as either a three-door or a five-door and could have full-time all-wheel drive.
