About the Grandland X

The Opel Grandland X --- also known as Vauxhall Grandland X in the UK market --- is a compact crossover SUV that was first launched in 2017, and was known as the Grandland X until 2021, when the “X” was dropped, making the very latest models simply the Opel Grandland.

The Grandland X was unveiled at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show and was intended to be the replacement for the outgoing Opel Antara and the Opel Zafira. It had been a longer ongoing project, however, with first word reaching the news back in 2012.

As part of a larger corporate group with PSA Peugeot Citroen, the Grandland shared its main platform with the Peugeot 3008 II, as well as the DS 7 Crossback and the Peugeot 5008 II, among others.

To coincide with the name change, the Grandland received some styling updates, which were seen by many as long overdue. Where the Grandland’s Peugeot cousins were lauded for their exterior styling, the Grandland X was long considered the “ugly sister” of the group. The 2021 facelift delivered sharper looks, including a new grille, new wheels, and new body lines to name but a few changes.

The Grandland comes in gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid formats, with only the gasoline version getting a 6-speed manual transmission, while the others are paired with an 8-speed automatic. It’s powered by a standard 1.2-liter gasoline engine, or a 1.6-liter engine if you get the plug-in hybrid. The diesel units have been 1.5-liter since 2018, but before that was 1.6-liter.

It competes with other compact crossovers like the Nissan Qashqai, and Jeep Compass. The Grandland will never be a “performance” vehicle, but it fulfills its role as a suitable family SUV, offering a spacious and comfortable interior, and 18.2 cubic feet of trunk space with the rear seats up.
