About the CX-9

The mid-size Mazda CX-9 is a long-standing member of Mazda’s growing crossover SUV range. It was first launched back in 2006, and is currently in its second generation after having been facelifted first in 2010, and then again in 2013. The current generation was launched in 2016, and at the time of writing starts at $36,855.

The Mazda CX-9 competes with the likes of the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Jeep Grand Cherokee, and the Ford Bronco. It comes in 6 different trim levels, from the base-level Sport (from $36,855) to the top-end Signature (from $48,785).

Unlike many of its competitor models, Mazda does not offer a V6 powertrain with the CX-9, instead offering a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-4 engine as the only option, which is paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

The CX-9 can still complete 0 to 60-mph in just 7.1 seconds, and according to many reviews is one of the most fun SUVs to drive, to many feeling like one is driving a smaller, more dynamic vehicle. It comes in both a FWD and an AWD configuration, the former being fuel-efficient at 22-mpg in the city, and 28-mpg on the highway. AWD drops each number by 2-mpg.

However, the main failings of the CX-9 were found in its cramped third-row seating option, which in turn also left very limited storage, which wasn’t so handy for families who need both the seating and the cargo capacity at their fingertips.

On the other hand, the CX-9 is very well appointed inside, with fine-quality and soft-touch materials prevailing throughout the vehicle, as well as brushed aluminum and genuine wood finishes.

There’s a 10.3-inch infotainment display as standard, with a very user-friendly interface. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto also come as standard. The CX-9 has also maintained a very strong 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA.
