About the CR-Z
The Honda CR-Z was a fairly short-lived sport compact hybrid electric car manufactured from 2010 for model years 2011 to 2016. It was built as a 2-door coupe, with front-engine layout, a 1.5-liter gasoline engine, CVT gearbox, and a 10-kW electric motor.
In some markets, there was a 2 + 2 seating arrangement, but in North America the back seats were removed. Another interesting quirk about the CR-Z was that it was the third Honda hybrid model that could also be fitted with a 6-speed manual transmission if preferred. The first two models were the Honda Insight, and the Honda Civic Hybrid.
In its final model year, the CR-Z had a price tag at around $21,170, showing it to be both affordable and innovative. This didn’t protect the CR-Z from criticism, however, especially as the performance of the vehicle came nowhere near matching its athletic coupe styling.
The Honda CR-Z was certainly efficient, and environmentally sound. The car could manage about 36-mpg in the city, and 39-mpg on the highway when paired with the CVT, and 31-mpg and 38-mpg respectively when paired with the manual transmission.
It was further rated as an “Advanced Technology Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle” or AT-PZEV, and was recognized as one of the least polluting vehicles available in the US. A design refresh came in 2016, but in the summer of 2016 Honda announced that it would be discontinued and replaced with the Honda Accord Hybrid, as well as the Honda Clarity.
The CR-Z did also live up to its athletic looks in some arenas, too. In 2010, two CR-Z models were developed for use in the “25-hour of Thunderhill” endurance race in California. Its hybrid engine was shown to be able to produce and withstand up to 533-hp.
