About the Taurus
A popular car in North America, the Taurus has been manufactured by The Ford Motor Company USA between 1986 – 2019. Overall, there has been 6 generations spanning a massive 34 years, with the exception of one year 2006 – 2007 when the company took a break n production.
The Ford Taurus is a near twin of the Mercury Sable. One of the most interesting facts about this car is that it was the world's first for using a ‘sophisticated process control.’ This was the brainchild of W. Edwards, the famous statistician working for Ford back in the 1980s. This represented Ford’s movement at the time, they were pushing boundaries, trying to further their technology and showing respect for the ‘modern driver’ by introducing a ‘culture of quality’ to all their vehicles. The motivation behind this push was due to overall poor performance by the company from 1979 – 1982, finding themselves with a $3 billion loss. Ford brought in a new team to work on features for all their cars, some of which they still use today. One of the new processes was to have all the controls in reach of the driver and easily identifiable by touch. It seems so obvious today but adding this to their cars made for fewer accidents.
At the time, the Taurus aesthetics was deemed ‘influential,’ with quite a few models quickly following suit. Towards the end of the 1990s to the early 2000s, sales started to slow, and Ford attributed this to the shift in the market towards SUVs. The numbers continued to worsen throughout the years, so badly in fact that in 2007, Ford withdrew the once extremely popular sedan.
Aside from the generational changes, this car barely altered its essential makeup, it stayed a mid-sized car throughout with front-wheel drive and kept its 4 doors. The only exception to this was the 5 door station wagon manufactured between 1986 – 2005. All of these models were built by Chicago Assembly on the South Side. The Taurus is still the 5th best-selling Ford ever made, in the USA, beaten only by the F-Series, Escort, Model T and, of course, the Mustang. Incredibly, Ford sold 7,519,919 worldwide during the Taurus production run.
