About the 3 Series (incl. M3)
As long-running executive sedan cars go, the BMW 3 Series is one of the most recognizable anywhere in the world. The BMW 3 Series was first introduced back in 1975, but since 2018 has entered its seventh generation, and also includes a high-specification “M” version the BMW M3.
The first-generation 3 Series was also known as the E21, and was built to replace the older 02 Series. While being initially naturally aspirated, the engines received fuel-injection systems in late 1975, and then in 1977 even came with 6-cylinder engines.
Over the years, the 3 Series continued to develop, eventually shortening its rear end to the more boxy and angular design that has become synonymous with the model today. The entire body became increasingly muscular, and then by the sixth and seventh generations were softened somewhat, making them more elegant and aerodynamic.
The latest model is the G20 (seventh generation), first launched back in 2018 for the 2019 model year. It is widely considered to be the best in its class, competing against the likes of the Genesis G70, Audi A5, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and Kia Stinger. The current range also includes a plug-in hybrid version, called the 330e.
The standard powertrain is a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine making 255-hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, which many reviewers have pointed out to be deceptively low, and a lot more powerful than it seems on paper. The upgraded powertrain is a 3.0-liter inline-6 with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system built-in, delivering up to 382-hp, and 369 lb-ft of torque.
Those with a bigger budget can always opt for the incredible BMW M3, however, which got its latest generation launched in 2020. The M3 offers a 3.0-liter twin-turbo inline-6 engine, which when put together with M Performance Parts can achieve up to 503-hp and 479 lb-ft of torque. The M3 also features optional AWD.
