About the Galaxy

Built by the car manufacturing giant Ford, the Galaxy is a 7-seat multi-purpose vehicle sold between the years 1995 and 2022. This was the first large MPV to be sold outside the United States for Ford, and shared the same basic structure of the S-Max and Mondeo.

Initially a result of the combined efforts from Volkswagen and Ford, the Galaxy sat alongside the VW Sharan and the SEAT Alhambra. All of which looked incredibly similar and all seating 6 passengers and one driver. With the option to add four-wheel drive, the Galaxy used its mechanics from the VW group and initially only offered two trim levels. These were Aspen and the GLX, the former with basic features and a reasonable price tag, the latter more high-end.

When Ford gave the Galaxy a facelift in 2000, they changed these trims to accommodate three variations and later in 2006, brought out a whole new generation. Following Ford's reclamation of their shares in Volkswagen, the new Galaxy's had only Ford engines from this point on. It was at this point that Ford introduced its new fold-flat system. This allowed for all seats to lie flush against the floor to increase cargo space when desired. The seats had fold-down tables with drinks holders on, very much like an airplane. In addition, the middle seat of the 2nd row could be doubled forward, on the back of which was a tray, again to hold laptops or picnics.

The third generation shared an engine with the S-Max including one diesel that was coupled with a 6-speed manual gearbox. So as to fit in with Ford's design story, the grille was changed to be brought in line with other cars such as the Mondeo, Focus, Fiesta, Puma and Kuga. Production ended in January 2022 following a successful 27 years and no successor was named.
