About the C4
A small compact family car built by Citroen, the C4 was created as part of the PSA Group and took the place of the Citroen Xsara.
Initially, the C4 was created with the intention to appeal to a wide variety of people, the first of which was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show as a hatchback or coupe.
Cousin to the Peugeot 307, the C4 had fairly advanced technology for the time. With lane departure warning, directional headlights and even a perfume dispenser built into the ventilation system, the Citroen C4 was considered a safe vehicle (again, leaning into its reputation as a family car). Another interesting feature was the attention that was paid to the airbag configuration. These airbags were built in such a way that upon deployment, they would expand ‘smartly’ to accommodate the shape of the specific individual.
The second generation was larger than its predecessor. Due to poor sales and to prevent competition with Citroen's other model, the DS3, the three-door C4 was dropped from production.
Numerous car review sites and journalists made comments on the more conventional design. The new C4 was far less radical than the former model, less rounded and looking more like other vehicles in its class. Only China saw the saloon version which was sold between the years 2015 and 2019.
Finally, in its third generation, the C4 changed radically, now with SUV styling, it had a fully upgraded interior with a vast touch screen on the dashboard and premium materials. This new SUV was built alongside the DS3 Crossback, Opel Corsa, Peugeot 208 and Peugeot 2008 on the EMPI Platform.
In 2021, the all-new C4 was awarded 4 stars by Euro NCAP with an 80% score awarded for adult safety and 83% for children. It lost points for the absence of frontal knee airbags and a ‘non-active bonnet.’
