About the XC70

The Volvo XC70 is a crossover variant of the V70, an executive wagon from the Swedish automaker. It could be said that Volvo was a trailblazer with the release of an off-road capable estate so early on.

The announcement of a crossover variant came in 1997, about a year after the original release of the V70. Since then, both the V70 and the XC70 have seen three generations' worth of updates.

Over the years, the XC70 has gone up against others in the off-road estate class, most notable being the Audi A4 Allroad Quattro, the Subaru Outback also comes to mind.

Being like many other crossover estates, the XC70 has typical features like a big spacious interior, a 5-door layout, and a number of features designed to increase off-road capabilities.

Unlike the V70, all three generations of the XC70 have had only the option of all-wheel-drive. This is a clear indication of the XC70’s increased off-road capabilities. Another change made for the XC70 was increased ground clearance and plastic exterior trim to protect from bumps.

That being said, it is still a Volvo, meaning luxury, comfort, and styling have all clearly been focused on.

The first-generation XC70 reigned from 1997 to 2003, whereafter the second generation took over. The second generation did come with a major upgrade in terms of off-road performance. Volvo doubled down on the exterior trim to give strong suggestions of the XC70’s cross-country intentions.

The last generation of the XC70, released in 2008, came with a second facelift to give it more modern styling. It was replaced by the V90 Cross Country after its discontinuation in 2016.

All three generations feature a host of similar engine configurations, ranging from 1.6-liter to 3.2-liter gasoline and 1.6-liter to 2.5-liter turbodiesel.
