About the C30

The C30 was a premium compact two-door hatchback with its engine located at the front.

Production started in 2006 and the first generation had the option of an inline-4 and straight 5 engine.

Sharing the Ford C1/Volvo P1 platform with the S40, V50 and C70, the C30 was first unveiled at the Paris Motor Show with Volvo highlighting the 160-watt surround sound system and shared instrument cluster components with the Volvo S40.

For the European market, Volvo offered a 1.6-liter or diesel engine or a 2.5-liter inline-5 turbo engine (again, in petrol or diesel).

There were several trim levels, the SE, SE Luxury UK, Kinestic, Momentum and Summum (in order of fewest features to greatest). In the USA and Canada, the ‘Polestar performance’ option was sold following a partnership with the company Polestar.

Lasting just one generation, the C30 had a fantastic media system, offering premium sound, with inbuilt CD, MP3 and WMA players.

Like most Volvos, the C30 gained a great reputation for safety with features like blind spot cameras, Electric stability control, side curtain airbags, traction control and other benefits that Volvo’s IntelliSafe system came with.

The C30 had a patent filed for the front and rear structure which could absorb an impact and spread out the shock.

2010 saw an update of this front design with a much wavier rear end. The rear window swooped low into the bumper to give the appearance of a lower ride height. 5 new colors were introduced, arguably the most radical was ‘orange flame’ along with a new luggage compartment concealed in the boot and the addition of a sport chassis. Volvo released several limited editions of the C30, like the C30 Efficiency which had lower ground clearance, a rear spoiler and 16-inch wheels.

The Boston Red Sox version was predictably red with had a large logo on the paintwork (only 107 of these vehicles were made).

Volvo created the C30 DRIVe, an electric concept vehicle showcased at the 2011 Paris Motor Show, it was one of five finalists for the ‘Green car Vision Award’ and the ‘Green car of the year’ in China.
