About the Tundra

The Toyota Tundra is a full-sized pick-up truck, manufactured in the USA since 1999. It is the second full-sized pickup built by Toyota (the first being the T100). The Tundra was the very first Toyota truck to be manufactured in Northern America; first in Princetown Indiana and then later in San Antonio, Texas. The model has won Motor Trend’s Truck of the year twice in 2000 and 2008.

The first generation was extremely similar to the T100 and the Tacoma, both vehicles shred the 3.4-liter V8 engine initially until a second was added (4.7-liter V8), this was the first V8 engine to ever feature in a pick-up. The Tundra started out life as the ‘Toyota T-150s’ but this was quickly picked up on by Ford as being far too similar to their model ‘T-150’, and following a lawsuit, Toyota changed the name.

There was a slight facelift in 2002 leading to the addition of a new grille and step side. A year later, in 2003, Toyota released their T3 special edition to coincide with the release of the Terminator 3 film, this version had a blacked-out grille, overall black trim and 17-inch wheels. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Tundra ‘Good Overall’ following rigorous testing in frontal-offset crash testing. This was the first ‘Good’ rating a full-sized pick-up had ever received; it outshone its competitors, Ford and Dodge who were both awarded ‘poor.’

The second generation ran from 2007 to 2013 and debuted in 2006 at the Chicago Auto Show. This model took its styling from the smaller Tacoma and integrated some features of the concept FTX. There were 31 configurations including 3 bed lengths, 3 cabin configurations, 3 wheelbases and 2 transmissions. These trucks were popular for construction workers as they could comfortably ‘fit a worker with a hard hat.’

The third generation was unveiled at the Motor Bella show in 2021. Built on a GA-F platform, there were 6 model trims, the SR, SR5, Limited, Platinum, 1974 edition and TRD Pro all of which came with 2 power strain options. At the start of 2000, Toyota recalled 110,000 vehicles after reports of severe rusting. Many of the recalled vehicles were deemed unsafe to drive, with dealers not allowing customers to drive them off the forecourt without having signed an affidavit confirming they were aware of the potential issues. Despite the problems, the Tundra has a 17% share of the full-size pick-up market with 107,798 sold to date.
