About the 86

The Toyota 86 is referred to as a 2+2 sports car and is the result of Subaru and Toyota codeveloping a ‘fastback coupe.’ Built at Subaru’s Gunma Manufacturing Plant, the 86 comprises a front engine and rear-wheel-drive layout

In 2008, Toyota purchased 16.5% shares in ‘Fuji Heavy Industries’ which included the Subaru automobile wing of the massive industrial corporation. This led to Toyota bringing on board Subaru’s developers in an effort to create a powerhouse of a vehicle.

In 2012, the first generation was released worldwide and depending on the country was either sold as just ‘86’ or ‘GT 86’. The former shipped to Asia, Australia, Northern America (in 2016), South Africa and South America, and the latter solely in Europe. By the second generation, the models became more unified, predominantly branded ‘GR 86.’

The 86 was highly anticipated due to its marriage of the two companies and following multiple releases of its concept cars. Five concept cars were released before the 86 went on sale, all of which were showcased in 2011 at the Tokyo Motor Show in a bid to show the progress the two manufacturers were making. Finally, on sale in 2012, the first generation had a 6-speed transmission with the option of 16 or 17-inch steel alloy wheels. This vehicle had numerous names throughout the world with several trim options available; these ranged from a basic all-black cloth interior to red leather seats and touch screen technology. There were small facelifts in 2013 and 2014 and to market this Subaru decided to make the 86 the first car to ever be sold and advertised exclusively online.

The second generation was released in 2020 where a slight change was made to the name changing it from GR 86 to GR86 (removing the space) for digital marketing reasons. The new model featured automatic transmission, advanced driver assistance and Eyesight branded stereoscopic cameras. The 86 has won an impressive number of awards over the years, including but not limited to Top Gear’s ‘Coupe of the year’ and ‘car of the year’, ‘Best Driver’s Car’ by Autocar and ‘Best performance Car’ by Auto Express. Unsurprisingly, the GR 86 shares similar accolades with the Mazda MX-5.
