About the Clio
After the hugely successful run by the Renault 5 during the 1970s and 1980s the French company went back to the drawing board and looked for the company's next supermini.
What they came back with was the Clio, a model launched in 1990 using some of the same chassis components that were used under the 5.
Above the chassis the car was totally new, sporting a rounded body and modern fuel-efficient engines under the hood.
The Renault 5 had seen major successes in motorsport too and with the performance trims that capitalized on that.
So the French firm continued that tradition with the Clio, offering 16 valve engines and a Williams trim made in partnership with the famous British tuning house known in Formula 1.
With each generation since the Clio has been offered in some sort of performance version including a mid-engine V6 (taken from the Laguna) in 2001.
With the move into its third generation in 2005, the Clio was also moved onto a more generic platform shared across many more models.
This Nissan-Renault B platform that the car now sat on was jointly developed between the two companies for smaller lines.
You could find it at work underneath such models as the:
Although the Clio line was a huge one for Renault during the 1990s and the 2000s it has slightly lost favor to the crossover SUVs that are now in fashion.
You can find the same platform the newer 2019+ Clio models use underneath the Renault Captur, essentially acting as the SUV version of the car going forward.
All of these modern models have warning lights built into the instrument cluster but with modern infotainment systems, they tend to be a bit more descriptive.
Understanding the meanings of these dashboard symbols can still prove to be a bit difficult but using the guide on this website you can quickly learn what they mean.
