About the Duster

The Dacia Duster is a compact crossover SUV, competing as a budget-friendly option in what is a very crowded market segment. The first-generation models were launched in 2010, being facelifted in 2013, and the second-generation models were launched in 2017 before being facelifted again in 2021.

Like many of its Dacia siblings, the base-level models have been criticized by some for being too scant on standard features, not to mention the generally cheap and plastic-dominated nature of the interior design. However, despite these heavy downsides, the Duster has also been praised for its folding seats, driver visibility, urban handling, comfortable suspension and a good-quality rear-view camera.

More modern features have followed with the arrival of the second generation and second round of facelifting, including electric power steering, blind-spot warning, keyless entry and start, daytime running lights, automatic climate control, and a MultiView camera system with a total of 4 different cameras. The latest version now has a ground clearance of 21cm compared to 20.5cm previously, which is a nice accompaniment to the new hill start assist and hill descent control features.

The interior is fairly straightforward, but when you climb the trim ladder you get an integrated infotainment system, better alloy wheels, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity and more, including those modern features we mentioned above.

Unlike the Dacia Sandero, however, the Dacia Duster has struggled to improve on its overall Euro NCAP safety scores, sticking at 3 stars for its latest round of test results from 2017, and scoring even lower at 0 stars for its 2021 testing in Latin America, which actually were done on the Renault-badged version, but it is mechanically the same car. That’s worrying for those who might buy this SUV for use in more rugged rural environments.

Other variants of the Duster model include the Duster Pick-Up, released in late 2020, which features a 1.65 (5.4-ft) cargo bed.
