About the S-Class

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class --- Sonderklasse, or “Special Class” in German --- is a full-size luxury sedan car that has served for many years as the “flagship” in the varied Mercedes-Benz sedan range. It was first introduced as a model back in 1954, but as the S-Class name that we now know, its history goes back to 1972.

The S-Class now spans 7 generations of car since 1972, the first of which was known as the W116 and was powered by a 2.8L inline-6 as the “small” offering, going all the way up to a 6.8L V8 engine at the top end of the scale.

But in reality, the first S-Class models were not truly built for luxury, style or engine power. In fact, they were manufactured mostly to demonstrate the advances in safety technology, many pioneered by Mercedes-Benz engineers. For instance, padding around the doors and steering wheels (before airbags), dual asymmetric windshield wipers, center depressions in the headrests, a rain-water management system to improve visibility, and more rounded bodywork designed to help reduce potential pedestrian injuries in any collision, to name but a few.

Years and further generations went by, and the S-Class continued to be the car into which Mercedes-Benz pioneered its latest technological advances and innovations. In the latest seventh-generation models, for instance, the company showcased their new augmented-reality navigation system that projected navigation instructions into the HUD, which from the driver’s perspective made navigation instructions appear as if by magic on the road in front of them.

The S-Class competes with the likes of the Audi A8, Genesis G90, and BMW 7-Series, frequently beating out its competitors in luxury, drive quality, features, and more. However, the biggest downside to the S-Class is the price, with the latest models starting at $112,150 for the S500, and going up to $118,750 for the S580 trim. Most competitors are $20,000-30,000 cheaper at the starting point, so it’s not exactly “affordable luxury.”
