About the HB20

The Hyundai HB20 is an SUV that attempts to offer great performance, a vast array of tech, and some serious style for a good price tag. Whilst it’s not bad on paper, the HB20 simply fails to keep up with its top competitors, such as the Kia Telluride and Ford Expedition. The car, since its release in 2012, has also had some serious safety issues, which has put off potential buyers for several years. The newer models, such as the 2020 HB20, have improved safety drastically, but it’s still a big problem for the model.

Since 2019, the HB20 has come equipped with a 1.0-liter turbocharged engine as standard. This engine is actually great. It provides just enough power for motorway driving, whilst being economical and refined. It might not be as fast as competitors, but it certainly gets the job done.

The ride of the HB20 is also respectable. On the roads, the suspension feels comfortable, but it really comes to life when you take the HB20 offroad. The handling is also great, making the HB20 feel agile and sharp.

The interior of the HB20 is pretty, if impractical. The cabin is made of plastics, which does look good but feels cheap and very breakable. The boot space is also below average, lowering its practicality.

The biggest problem with the HB20 is that it’s seen as a very unsafe car. Older models would malfunction in a number of areas. For instance, the warning lights would fail to pick up on key faults like engine failure, and the overall bodywork was useless at protecting a driver in the event of a crash. Newer models have addressed this issue, but there will always be a stigma of the HB20 as being the most unsafe SUV on the market.
