About the Accord (incl. Acura TSX)
The Honda Accord (also known as the Inspire in Japan and China) started life in 1976. Best known as a 4 door sedan, it is one of the best selling cars in Northern America from 1989 to 2005.
Its name has lent itself to numerous vehicle types, to include station wagons, hatchbacks, coupes and a series of crossovers. The Accord was originally a compact hatchback, and due to slow sales, the decision was made to change the model to appeal to a larger demographic.
The platform that the car sits on was also used to create several other lines including the Odyssey minivan and the Pilot crossover SUV.
This was the very first Japanese car to be manufactured in America after Honda moved production to Marysville, Ohio at their Marysville Auto Plant. After Honda’s decision to change the hatchback to a sedan, sales quickly rocketed making the Accord the best-selling Japanese car in America for 16 years.
The first generation had three doors and went on sale on 7th May 1976. Interestingly, before the Accord, no car under 2 litres had power steering. 1981 saw in the second generation, this line was sold in Japan, Europe and North America. At the time, the Accord was described as having a ‘modern interior’ with shag carpets, velar cabin and chrome accents.
Over the years, the Accord cycled through the generations and facelifts, in total there have been ten generations, the latest making a debut on 14th July 2012. This was exclusively a 4-door sedan (having discontinued the coupe). The Accord had been brought right up to date with new front and rear parking sensors, 6" automotive head-up display and a 4-way height-adjustable power lumbar driver's seat. The base model features a 1.5-liter VTEC turbo 4 cylinder engine as standard, with a 2-liter option. In a bid to reduce weight, the front and rear bumpers and hood are all constructed from aluminium.
