About the 500X

The Fiat 500X is a subcompact crossover SUV made by Italian giant Fiat, now part of giant multinational Stellantis. It was first unveiled at the 2014 Paris Motor Show as the successor to the already fairly successful 500L compact MPV. The Fiat 500X actually shares much of its architecture and components with fellow corporate sibling, the Jeep Renegade.

The 2 main powertrain offerings in the North American market for the Fiat 500X include 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder gasoline unit paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, as well as a naturally aspirated 2.4L 4-cylinder unit paired with a 9-speed automatic. The former is a FWD drivetrain, and the latter is also FWD but with an optional AWD.

The European market widens the powertrain option considerably as the Fiat 500X and that general style of car enjoys even more popular there. In 2020, the 500X received some much-anticipated upgrades that were designed to help it be even more competitive in the North American market.

In fact, Fiat has had to work hard to try and help the 500X stand out in North America, as some have derided the brand as being an acronym for “Fix it again, Tony.” The new 500X in 2020 was a big part of rehabilitating that image.

To do that, they’ve updated the exterior styling with new, more advanced light arrays with daytime running lights and LED headlights as standard, newly designed alloys, almost 8 inches of ground clearance, and a completely new design for the rear lights.

Those wanting more interior space may be disappointed though, as the Fiat 500X is still about a whole foot shorter than some of its competition from Toyota and Honda. The trunk only holds about 14 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up, which is about what you’d expect from a regular sedan, not from an SUV crossover.

The Fiat 500X is a bold, stylish SUV with a lot to offer, but it might not be all the crossover that everyone wants.
