About the Brava

Known also as the Brava, the Bravo is a small family car built by the Italian car manufacturer Fiat.

Not to be confused with the American classic car, the Fiat Brava that existed in 1978, the Bravo enjoyed sales from 1995 to 2003. The name variations refer to the different formats these cars are built in. A 3-door hatchback took the name Bravo, whereas the Brava was a 5-door fastback.

Replacing the aging Fiat Tipo, the Bravo was of a different style, the chassis was improved for drive performance for the Bravo, and comfort aspects were worked upon for the Brava.

Each version had its own specific colors to further distinguish these styles, with a 1.4-liter 12 valve petrol engine at the base level, with the addition of 1.6-liter, 1.8 liter and 2-liter.

Scoring a disappointing 2 stars for safety with the Euro NCAP tests, the Bravo could reach a maximum speed of 132 mph and added 2 turbo diesel engines to the range. These models were created as either a saloon or an estate and were designed to directly compete with the Ford Mondeo and the Vauxhall Vectra. Review sites applauded the Bravo for its giant boot space when compared to its rivals.

Fiat brought out an arguably bizarre looking 6 seat compact MPV version of the Bravo to try and take more of the market share. In general, the Bravo and Brava were described as ‘economical, futuristic and silent.’ A marketing campaign boosted sales with its strapline ‘Fiat Bravo. Fiat Brava. La Scelta.’ Which translated means ‘Fiat Bravo. Fiat Brava. The Choice.’

In a 1995 review by Jeremy Clarkson, he showed surprising respect for this little car saying ‘This is how an ordinary car can look like, if you put a bit of effort into it.’ Changes were made to the front dash and grill in its 1999 makeover Fiat added the automatic air conditioning system from the Fiat Coupe.
