About the X5
Most people remember the BMW X5 as being the German auto giant’s first foray into the world of SUVs. Having been so used to seeing BMWs either as executive sedans or sports cars, it was fascinating for many to see how they’d tackle SUVs. Having acquired British brand Land Rover just prior to the release, the X5 benefited from Land Rover technology when being developed.
As has happened across many brands, the BMW X5 took off fantastically and has since spawned many other SUV models, creating what is now the most competitive segment of the automotive marketplace.
In all, there have been 4 generations of BMW X5, the first launched in 1999, the second in 2006, the third in 2014, and the current fourth-generation in 2019. The X5 is a mid-size model, occupying the space between the smaller X3 and larger X6 models.
If buying the latest X5 model, the MSRP is around $61,500, which makes it more expensive than its strongest competitor the Genesis GV80 (from $51,295), but more affordable than the Porsche Cayenne at $70,350. Other competitor models include the Volvo XC90, and Audi Q8.
The latest model comes in 5 trim levels, with the top-end M50i starting at $84,095. However, even the mid-level xDrive40i offers impressive 0 to 60-mph times of just 4.8 seconds, as well as sports acceleration, and an AWD drivetrain.
The BMW X5 is a family-friendly SUV offering up to 3 seating rows, but the third row is mostly suitable just for smaller children. Those who don’t need the third row can lower it to increase cargo capacity. Standard interior features include dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, and ambient lighting. Options include massage function, heated front armrests, and a Bowers & Wilkins premium audio system, among others.
