About the CLS-Class
First called the CLS-Class, the CLS was an executive car built by the German car manufacturer Mercedes-Benz in 2004. CLS is an initialism for ‘coupe leicht sportlich, or coupe light sport.
Initially, it was designed as a four-door fastback saloon that was based upon the E-Class platform, with the estate version added a little later. All versions of the CLS were available in the high-performance stylings of ‘AMG.’. In terms of size, the CLS sits directly in between the E-Class and the S-Class and competes directly with the BMW 8 Series, Porsche Panamera and the Audi A7.
Designed by Michael Fink (who also created the CLK, C-Sport Coupe and Maybach 57), the first generation debuted in 2004 and had a fairly successful run until the second generation rolled off the production line in 2010.
Now available in a four-door coupe or 5 door estate, the new CLS was based upon the Mercedes F800 concept car. Mercedes-Benz gave the option of all-wheel drive for models built onwards from 2010, and in 2014 a new facelift saw engine enhancements.
In 2018, Mercedes dropped all versions of the CLS in favor of continuing the model solely as a 4-door sedan with rear-wheel drive. This vehicle had a 2.9-liter straight 6 turbocharged diesel engine or a 3-liter straight 6 turbocharged petrol.
With an aggressive grille, the modern design was sleek with swooping front headlights and a number of color combinations. Critics have pointed out the vehicle lacks space in the boot and back seat fundamentally due to styling, but this is more than made up for by the excellent fuel economy and upper-class interior.
