About the Maxima
The Nissan Maxima first arrived back in 1980 and is currently the largest sedan offered in the Nissan range, above the Altima. The Maxima comes at a cost premium compared to other sedans in the range, but with that comes a great deal more power and technology at one’s disposal.
The original Maxima was released in 1980, inspired by the Datsun Bluebird. Nissan made the Maxima longer to accommodate a larger inline-6 engine, something that previous similar models had never had the capacity for. The car was developed over 7 more generations to deliver the current 8th generation, which was released in 2016 and facelifted in 2019.
The new Nissan Maxima is a sports sedan powered by a 3.5L V6 gasoline engine that even when delivering up to 300-hp can still manage 20-mpg in the city and 30-mpg on the highway. The base-level SV starts at just under $38,500, and the other 2 trims, SR and Platinum start at $43,625 and $43,775 respectively.
The engine isn’t just a cosmetic addition. It makes a meaningful difference to the performance of this car, giving the Maxima class-leading acceleration and power. One small problem for some fans of the more “spirited” drive, however, is that the powertrain is paired with a CVT transmission, which seems to take away from its potential. These CVT units are most often used in lower-spec cars where they work well.
Having said that, people buying it as a large, powerful and comfortable sports sedan are seldom disappointed. The suspension is well damped and allows for a quiet and relaxing ride. The car also handles tight corners well, showing minimum lean. The interior is spacious enough for 5 adults and is packed full of quality soft-touch materials.
Those who are Nissan fans who want a comfortable sedan that easily rivals the Toyota Avalon or VW Arteon would not have to look any further. It’s competitively priced and well-stocked with features to make it extremely appealing.
Maxima Discontinued
In 2023 the Nissan Maxima was discontinued from production as many of the major automakers move away from traditional sedans.
Instead, many customers are opting for crossover SUVs that offer great access and driving position such as the Qashqai and smaller Juke.
