About the Century

The name “Century” is perhaps very apt for this Buick, because the Buick Century is a car with a seriously long history and backstory. In all, there have been 6 generations of Buick Century, the first running from 1936 to 1942, and the newest sixth-generation models being built between 1997 and 2005.

The earliest predecessor to the Buick Century was actually the Series 60, which was made from 1930 to 1935. The same B-body platform was used to create the first-generation Century models in 1936.

By the second generation, the Buick Century had firmly left the 1930s behind and was styled much more in line with large sedans of the time such as the 1950s Chevy Bel Air; a long square body, big round lights, and a shining metal bumper.

Over the years, the Buick Century was built as a coupe, sedan, and even as a station wagon body style. It was only when it reached the sixth generation that the model settled on a sedan-only design.

Like many cars of that time, the Buick Century lost a lot of its romance and sharp styling in the decades that followed. The sixth-generation models were unrecognizable from those glamorous 50s-style sedans, but they also had better features like automatic transmissions, more reliable engines, bucket seats, console shifter, and more.

The main powertrain of the last generation of Century models was a 3.1-liter V6 unit, except in China where they used a smaller 2.0-liter inline-4 as the standard, with 2.5-liter and 3.0-liter V6 engines as optional powertrains.

While production of the Buick Century finished in most markets by 2005, it did continue for a bit longer in China, running until 2008. Eventually, however, it was replaced by the Buick Regal, a model with which the Century actually shared DNA. The main reason for discontinuing the line was poor sales numbers.
