About the Yaris
The Toyota Yaris is a classic supermini or subcompact car, released in 1999, it replaced the Starlet and the Tercel. This little car has enjoyed huge success having been exported worldwide whilst (unusually) keeping its nameplate ‘Yaris’ throughout. The name has also been used on other vehicle models, notably the Yaris Verso mini MPV in Europe (a minivan), but renamed for Japan as the Fun Cargo. Also, in 2020, an SUV from Toyota borrowed the name ‘Yaris Cross’. Yaris is a derivative of ‘charis’, which in itself is a derivative of ‘charites’ which translates to the ‘Greek Goddess of Charm and Beauty.’ By 2020, the Yaris had sold 8.71 million units.
The first generation, was first sold in 1999, and was offered as either a hatchback, or a sedan & coupe. For the second generation, Toyota dropped the coupe leaving only the hatchback or the sedan (the hatchback was eventually discontinued in 2013 for the Asian market).
Where the third generation had a cosmetic update, the fourth generation saw the biggest change. The all-new Yaris was revealed on 16th October 2019 (in Japan and Amsterdam, Holland) and was released solely as a hatchback. The new variant was built on a GA-B Platform, was designed by Yasunari Suezawa and chief hybrid engineer Takashi Uehara. The petrol 4-wheel drive Yaris went on sale on the 10th of February 2020. The new trim levels available are Icon (basic spec), Design, Dynamic and the Excel (top end). The new models come with a huge number of extras, to include 7-inch infotainment screen, reversing camera, alloy wheels, electric rear windows, push-button start, blind-spot monitoring, auto braking and a panoramic roof.
America didn’t see the 4th generation of the Yaris as Toyota decided to withdraw it from the market completely.
