About the Crown

Originally not incredibly well known outside of the Asian markets, the Toyota Crown has quickly proved to be a worthy veteran. Having always been a fairly large vehicle in the Toyota range, the Crown is now a very popular luxury vehicle in Japan.

Originally named the ‘Toyopet Crown’ it has become a largely mainstream sedan (and subsequent SUV) and boasts some of the largest proportions of any car in its class. Alongside its obvious accolades, the Crown is surprisingly the longest-running passenger car in Japan.

Following its original successes, Toyota started exporting the model in 1958 to the European and American markets to place it in direct competition with the likes of Nissan’s Cedric and the Honda Legend.

The Crown was soon adopted by the Japanese police force, giving the vehicle even more credibility amongst its potential customers. This made the vehicle synonymous with reliability and longevity (something that had previously alluded to its reputation).

To date, there have been 4 main generations spanning the decades in the USA, the most recent styling pays homage to the original design but introduces modern sweeping lines giving it a more futuristic aesthetic. The Toyota Crown has always boasted the very latest in technological advances which has meant that amongst its critics it’s been dubbed ‘the most over-engineered executive sedan.’ Because of this ‘over engineering’ the Crown comes with quite a hefty price tag. It is in fact the most expensive (now) SUV that Toyota has to offer. The flagship luxury car has an incredibly iconic design, from the sweeping front grill to the sheer size of the wheelbase there is no mistaking this model for one of its competitors.

Although the bodywork has gone through enormous changes over the years; sedan, 4 door hard to, coupe, 3/5 door wagon and a utility pickup truck, Toyota has finally settled on the wildly popular SUV styling which seems to appeal to the modern customer.
