About the Corolla Cross

The Toyota Corolla Cross is one of the newest additions to the Toyota lineup, first launched in July 2020, but only arriving in the North American market for the 2022 model year. It is also known in the Chinese market as the Frontlander.

The Corolla Cross is meant to offer the same kind of value that you’d get buying one of the already best-selling and much-loved Corolla models, but with more utility and space. With starting prices hovering around $23,000-24,000, the value aspect is easy to see.

The utility is also easy to spot when you open the rear door to get to the cargo area, offering up to 25.5 cubic feet as standard. That jumps to 66.8 cubic feet when you lower the rear seats to load in bulkier items.

This crossover SUV is available in 8 different trim levels, including 5 hybrid models that have been added in the 2023 model year. The base-level L starts at $24,000 in the latest model year, while the XLE starts at $28,000. The LE Hybrid starts at $28,000 as well.

The standard models come with a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine paired with a CVT transmission, which contributes to what some reviewers have described as “lazy” acceleration. That negative point aside, the Corolla Cross is a strong vehicle on the road, with decent handling and comfortable ride quality.

In terms of fuel economy, the Corolla Cross delivers about 31-mpg in the city, and 33-mpg on the highway. With the hybrid models, the combined rating is estimated to rise to 37-mpg.

The interior should be very familiar to anyone who has driven a 4-door Corolla in the past, offering an almost identical layout. Upgrading to the XLE trim delivers faux-leather seating, as well as a leather-wrapped wheel and heated front seats.
