About the Colt

The Colt nameplate has been used for a number of vehicles produced by the Japanese car manufacturer Mitsubishi since 1962. The Mitsubishi Colt that this article relates to is a subcompact vehicle that started production in 2002 and had a lifespan of a little over a decade.

Designed by Olivier Boulay (the vice present of the company since 2009) the Colt began sales in Japan in 2002, and then two years later in Europe. Sharing the chassis with the Smart ForFour, the Colt was created with four petrol engines, the 1.1-liter, 1.3-liter, 1.5-liter and 1.5-liter turbo. From 2005 in Europe, the Colt was only available as a three-door hatchback.

With a seating arrangement of 2 + 2 (four seats), Mitsubishi created a coupe version with a hard top, a different approach when compared to its sister car the ForTwo which had a canvas roof on its convertibles. Partially made in Holland and Pininfarina, Turin Italy, the Colt underwent an upgrade in 2008 which had chrome headlamps and lighter rims on its Limited edition the ‘Ralliart Version-R’ of which only 300 units were sold. Switzerland received a sporty top model which had fitted new shock absorber springs, a reinforced rear axel and a lower ride height.

Mitsubishi released a new version, the Colt MIEV which had a separate electric motor attached to each wheel (these were all electric with 2 20 kW in-wheel motors). A speed of 150 kmph was achieved with these models, with a top charge speed of 10 minutes and coupled with quick charge batteries. The Colt-Plus was released solely for the Japanese market, with a larger boot, and automatic tailgate accessed via a remote. 2008 saw a facelift primarily of the interior with the addition of air conditioning, a new stereo system and a revised instrument cluster.
