About the G-Class
It’s very boxy and has been around for many decades already, but the Mercedes-Benz G-Class SUV is actually among the most luxurious and high-end offerings within the Mercedes range. The latest-generation models have a starting price at $134,300. Its main competitors are the BMW X7, Land Rover Range Rover, the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and other large SUV models.
The G-Class has been marketed chiefly as an off-roading vehicle, historically speaking, which helps explain its adoption by multiple militaries around the world, especially in western countries where modified versions have been used for decades.
In more recent years, however, it has increasingly become a symbol of luxury and top-end SUV engineering. Interestingly, however, these qualities of luxury and pedigree have not come at the expense of any of its off-road capabilities, which is what tends to happen to other luxury SUV brands that evolve from off-road models.
Some popular platforms have called it a “Jeep Wrangler for the rich and famous,” and in some senses, that’s not far off the mark. However, the G-Class exhibits many unique Mercedes-only traits like its 416-hp V8 engine, for instance. You won’t find a Wrangler with that kind of power.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class can also tow up to 7,000-lbs, and is equipped with three different locking differentials, which are the secret to helping it tackle virtually any terrain you put in front of it. Mind you, the boxy build doesn’t make it feel quite as secure when you take tight corners at high speeds. To be fair, though, that’s not what the main appeal of the G-Class is, anyway.
The interior of the G-Class certainly is luxurious, with a standard 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, 3-zone climate control, a multitude of interior upholstery options, massaging front seats, heated seats, and of course huge amounts of headroom afforded by that same boxy design.
