About the Rio

The Kia Rio is a small hatchback that aims to marry affordability, practicality and performance. It does this in style, but still may not be strong enough to compete with the likes of the VW Golf and Ford Fiesta.

Under the hood, the Kia Rio has a choice of 3 engines. A smaller, 1.25-litre engine, producing just 83 horsepower can be selected. This is clearly not enough power for most people, and unless you drive exclusively in city centres, you’ll want a bigger engine.

The next engine offered is a 1.0 Litre 3-cylinder petrol, producing just under 100 horsepower. This is actually surprisingly quick and will handle well even on the motorway. Finally, drivers have the choice of selecting a hybrid, which adds around 20 horsepower.

The Rio’s handling is very unimpressive. It feels much too stiff, and tight bends can make you feel like you’re going to topple over. It can make driving very stressful, which is the last thing you want from a hatchback.

Inside the cabin, you can understand why this car is a budget option. The materials feel cheap, and whilst they aren’t ugly, competitors offer a much nicer look. The interior is minimal, which is a point in its favour.

As for infotainment, the Kia Rio offers drivers an 8-inch touchscreen display, that can be connected to a smartphone. The infotainment system offers handy shortcuts to music playlists, the radio and even Satnavs, and is overall incredibly easy to use.

The  Rio scored a very unimpressive safety rating of 3 stars with EuroNCAP. This is very low for a modern vehicle, and perhaps shows you why it’s so cheap. That being said, you can add Kia’s Advanced Driving Assistance Pack, which will raise the safety rating all the way up to five stars. This is definitely worth the investment.
