About the Tipo

The Fiat Tipo is a compact sedan and hatchback car with a long history. In fact, to be clear, we are referring to the Tipo released in 2015, as opposed to the older model that was previously manufactured from 1988 to 1995. It is also badged as the Dodge Neon in the Mexican and Middle Eastern market, and as the Fiat Egea in Turkey.

In Europe, the Fiat Tipo has represented a fairly eclectic range, including a 4-door sedan, a 5-door station wagon, and a 5-door hatchback. A facelift in 2020 saw the arrival of a new crossover version, the Fiat Tipo Cross arriving within the range.

The most popular format, however, remains the Fiat Tipo 5-door family-friendly hatchback, suitable for many thanks to its affordability, great features, and suitability in both city and suburban environments. It is an interesting offering because in terms of quality it manages to compete with the likes of the VW Golf, but when it comes to price point, it’s more aligned with affordable Skoda options.

While the exterior enjoys a fairly refined look, the interior is unfortunately populated by a number of key areas in cheap plastics. However, standard equipment of DAB radio, Bluetooth connectivity, electric mirrors, air conditioning, and a spare wheel. Upgrading to the top of the trim level gets you satellite navigation, a reverse parking camera, parking sensors, and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Where it’s most lacking for those carrying tall passengers is in the rear seating area, which has a fairly limited amount of headroom --- but a good knee room offering --- and no center arm rest or cup holders.

This little Fiat has enjoyed a mixed bag when it comes to Euro NCAP safety scores, scoring 3 stars on the standard test in 2016, and 4 stars on the additional safety pack test in 2016. Sales in Europe and Turkey, however, have remained relatively strong.
