About the Regal
The Buick Regal started life as an upscale midsized car in 1973. It was branded as a ‘Personal Luxury Car’ and was offered as a coupe or sedan until 1997, then the coupe line was dropped.
The first generation (1973) followed in the footsteps of its predecessor the Buick Riviera (1963), both had high trim and were top-end vehicles.
This Regal was originally marketed as the Century Regal Colonnade Hardtop Coupe. It went five years with little change and had reasonable sales, but was consistently beaten by the more popular Monte Carlo and Cutlass Supreme (both best-selling cars in America at the time).
The second generation started manufacture in 1978, here the Regal was downsized and had a 3.2-liter V6 engine that came with 3-speed manual transmission (this was later replaced by automatic transmission). During this run, the Regal was brought out as a 4-door sedan and a 5-door station wagon. The station wagon was dropped in 1983.
The third generation was built on the GM W platform and was the first vehicle to use this. By now, the Regal was offered only as a coupe and had a 2.8-liter V6 engine that produced 125 horsepower (there was no V8 or turbocharged V6 option). The coupe was later changed to a 4-door sedan due to the declaiming sales in the luxury car market.
The fourth-generation (1997) used the revived W Platform and shared that with the Oldsmobile Intrigue, Pontiac Grand Prix, Chevrolet Lumina and the Chevrolet Monte Carlo. This generation featured a 3.8-liter V6 engine with heated leather seats, Monsoon 8 speaker surround sound and dual climate control. The Regal ceased production on 1st June 2004 and was replaced by the Buick LaCrosse. Buick decided to revive the badge some years later, this ran for two generations as a midsized sedan but again, Buick ended production due to the increase in demand for SUVs.
