About the RDX

The Acura RDX was launched back in 2006 for the 2007 model year and is marketed as the range’s main compact luxury crossover SUV model. It was the second crossover product after the creation of the larger MDX.

It shared a platform with the Honda Civic and CR-V for its first two generations of production, but the latest third-generation models launched in 2019 use their own independent Acura platform.

The earliest models were powered by a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with turbo, before being upgraded to a 3.5-liter V6 engine in the second generation launched in the 2013 model year. The latest versions use a 2.0-liter turbocharged unit generating up to 272-hp and 280 lb-ft of torque, achieving 22-mpg in the city, 28-mpg on the highway, and a combined rating of 24-mpg.

The very latest versions are priced from about $41,700, making them more affordable than close competition from Mercedes-Benz or Porsche. However, the RDX powertrain was far from comparable to either of these brands.

Furthermore, there are some complaints that the latest 10-speed automatic transmission used in the Acura RDX is too slow in downshifting, which in turn impacts the positive effects of the turbocharger.

On the more positive front, the RDX has been praised for its roomy cabin, and generous 29.5 cubic feet of standard cargo space. It has also maintained a 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA, as well as “Good” ratings from the IIHS.

The 2022 model year brought a facelift to the third-generation models, including an updated front grille, a new rear bumper, and larger air intakes put in on the front bumper. Acura also added 2 new exterior colors to the lineup.

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the RDX now, as is Amazon Alexa integration. Further tech options include wireless charging, and ambient lighting with 27 color options.
