About the Discovery

Released as early as 1989, the Land Rover Discovery is one of the company’s most well-known and best-selling cars. Competing against top cars in the luxury SUV space, such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90, the car impresses with its unbelievable offroad ability, as well as great technology and sharp styling. However, the Discovery does fall short in a few key areas. For instance, the vehicle’s performance simply cannot compare to competitors, and the interior is cramped and has a disappointing amount of cargo space. Ultimately, if you’re looking for an SUV that will go anywhere, this Land Rover is an excellent choice. However, if you want something more well-rounded, opt for an Audi.

The internals of the Land Rover Discovery leads to a very lackluster and disappointing ride. Base models come equipped with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, turbocharged engine, which produces around 300 horsepower. The base engine simply doesn’t produce enough power, especially when you consider the size and weight of the Discovery. You can opt for a six-cylinder, which will produce 355 horsepower, but this still feels slow and sluggish compared to its competition. Luckily, the engine is reliable, and you’ll probably never even see a warning light pop up.

If you’re looking for sharp handling, this vehicle will disappoint you. The Discovery feels incredibly heavy, which makes turning a challenge, and there’s plenty of body lean too. This has been a problem since the SUV's release, and newer models, like the 2021 version, still haven’t fixed this.

Thankfully, the suspension of the Discovery is near perfect. As an off-roader, the car will be able to soak up pretty much everything the road could throw at it, which will leave you with a quiet and comfy ride.
