About the Alto

There is no shortage of small city cars, and it seems that every company has had an attempt at one in the past. But one company that has consistently produced and refined its city cars is Suzuki, and the Alto is a representation of years of experience in the market. Sure, the Alto isn’t the best city car on the market, and the Volkswagen Up! and Citroen C1 might outclass it on paper. But what the Alto does offer, and has since its release in 1979, is excellent value for money, a fun driving experience, and a reliable ride. So, if you just want to get around town, this model might just be the perfect city car for you.

Under the hood, the Suzuki Alto doesn’t exactly pack the most exciting engine in the world. A small 1-liter engine comes as standard, but the vehicle is light, so it actually feels pretty quick. In fact, it’ll do 0-60 in under 12 seconds, and reach a maximum speed of 96 miles per hour. This isn’t record-breaking by any means, but the engine is practical and fun to use. It has a decent fuel economy too, so you’ll see the fuel warning light pop up very few times as you dart around town.

The Alto’s ride is uncomfortable, to say the least. Whilst this is true of most city cars, it’s particularly bad in this example and it can feel as if you’re going to jump off the road sometimes!

The interior of the Alto is pretty uninspiring. The cabin is made from cheap materials that feel ready to pop off at every second, and standard models come with almost no infotainment. But, this does help to keep the cost down, and if you don’t mind old-fashioned controls and the radio, you should be fine.
