About the Sunfire
The Pontiac is known firstly as a replacement for the outgoing Pontiac Sunbird vehicle, but also as a predecessor to the Pontiac G5 models that came after it. There was only ever one generation of this compact convertible/coupe/sedan, but it still underwent two facelifts and redesigns during that relatively short lifespan from the 1995 to 2005 model years. The convertible model was discontinued in 2000.
A total of 4 powertrains ranging from 2.2-liter to 2.4-liter were made available to buyers over the decade of production that the Sunfire enjoyed. The base-level trim always offered the 2.2-liter option as standard, but the later version of that engine, the Ecotec inline-4 offered from 2002 to 2005 was the most powerful at 140hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. The earlier two variants from 1995 to 1997 and 1998 to 2002 only offered 120hp and 115-hp respectively. The latter did gain 5 lb-ft of torque over the former, however.
The 4-door sedan version offered greater practicality while the 2-door coupe and convertible gave sportier and more aerodynamic aesthetics. The Sunfire could easily be spotted thanks to its distinct rounded edges and prominent curves, especially at the rear end of the vehicle. The front-end design featured what was a fairly typical sloping hood, later with Pontiac’s distinct inlaid grille design, too.
Buyers could get the Sunfire in either the standard SE trim level, or the more upmarket GT trim level. The GT offered a more powerful 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine variant that could deliver up to 150hp and 150 lb-ft of torque, which was later replaced with the 2.4-liter “Twin Cam” engine. The higher trim also was decked out with 16-inch alloys, a dual exhaust, and the sportier front-end design we mentioned earlier.
