About the Aztek

The Pontiac Aztek is a mid-size crossover SUV that was manufactured by General Motors between 2001 and 2005. There was only ever a single generation released.

It features the typical 5-door layout found in most SUVs. Drivetrains offered are either front-wheel or all-wheel drive depending on the trim level selected. It was built on the U-Body/GMT250 platform.

There was also the rebadged Buick Rendezvous, which featured a lot of shared mechanical components but with arguably much better styling.

Despite production consisting of only a single generation, the Aztek featured several yearly changes.

It was only ever offered with a single powertrain option. This was a 3.4-liter LA1 V6 petrol engine that was mated with a 4-speed automatic transmission.

There were two models sold initially, the base and the GT version, which had front-wheel and all-wheel drive respectively. GM later discontinued the GT trim in 2002.

There was also only a single trim level offered after 2002. This was the base version. Despite having only one trim level, there were several optional extras like a sliding cargo floor and rear stereo controls.

The Aztek was heavily criticized for its unique styling. It even placed first in The Daily Telegraph’s Top 100 Ugliest Cars of All Time in 2008. This definitely played a role in the very low sales the model faced, which led to its discontinuation.

Upon its discontinuation, it was replaced by the Pontiac Torrent, another mid-size crossover SUV.
