About the Nexo

The Hyundai Nexo is perhaps the most interesting SUV on the market as of today. This isn’t because of its styling, interior or even performance. Rather, it’s because of what powers it. The Nexo is fuelled entirely with hydrogen. This is the company’s first attempt at a hydrogen car, and it does show. For the price, the car is pretty poor, and you could certainly get a much better SUV for much cheaper.

Under the hood, the hydrogen-powered fuel-cell stack, coupled with a 40-kWh battery pack, produce around 161 horsepower. This allows the Nexo to accelerate from 0-60 in 8.4 seconds, which is very slow when compared to other SUVs at this price point. The range of this Hyundai is also interesting. The company reports that it’ll be able to go for 380 miles before re-fuelling, which is actually pretty impressive for a hydrogen car.

Inside, the Nexo actually competes with its rivals pretty well. Drivers will be pleased to hear that the car comes with a cargo space of 57 cubic feet if you fold the back seats. There’s plenty of room for several passengers, and the seats are extremely comfortable.

Beyond this, the Nexo has some great styling. Like most modern SUVs, the Nexo takes a very minimalistic and modern approach to its looks, and it really works. Vinyl upholstery and silver wheels and dials make the cabin a very pleasant place to be.

There’s plenty of tech packed into the Nexo too. The centerpiece is the 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment center. As with all modern Hyundai’s, this is faultless. Couple this with a packed instrument cluster, phone connectivity, compatibility with the Blue Link app, and there’s not much more you could ask for.

The Nexo is one of the first of its kind, so there are going to be problems. But, for a new model, it does get a lot of things right, even if it is a little pricey.
