About the 4 Series

Among the eclectic offerings of BMW sedans, coupes, and grand tourers, the BMW 4 Series is relatively new. It was first introduced back in 2013 for the 2014 model year, and was updated with a second generation in 2020. It started life as a concept car at the North American International Auto Show in 2013, before eventually being launched as the F32.

The first-generation BMW 4 Series --- the F32 --- was sold as a 2-door coupe, 2-door convertible, or as a 4-door fastback. It was initially developed as an advancement of the E92, or third-generation 3 Series models, offering a longer wheelbase and better performance credentials.

Under the hood was a 1.5-liter or 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine, but BMW also released a high-performance version, the M4, with a 3-liter S55 inline-6 engine capable of up to 493hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

The second generation of BMW 4 Series models was launched in 2019 in Frankfurt after some major redesign work, most noticeably in the creation of the new larger and vertically oriented kidney grille at the front of the car --- a controversial decision in the minds of many.

The second-gen models were given the model name G22, with the same 2-liter and 3-liter gasoline and diesel engine options, but now also with a gasoline hybrid. The most powerful gasoline engines deliver an impressive 382hp and 369 lb-ft of torque, able to launch the car from 0 to 60 in just 4.5 seconds.

Buyers of the BMW 4 Series also benefit from the company’s generosity when it comes to standard equipment and personalization options. There are 5 different interior color schemes to choose from, and full leather interiors are available too. The trunk only offers 15.5 cubic feet of space, which isn’t as generous as some other BMW models, but still ranks higher than most typical sedans.

For the 2022 model year, the 4 Series line gained an all-electric version that the German automaker dubbed the i4. Although more like the 3 Series underneath, the i4 offers a higher level of luxury like the 4 Series line that spawned from it.
