About the SX4

Suzuki has always been known for its cheap, yet high-value cars, and the SX4 is no different. Since 2005, the SX4 has been one of the cheapest offroaders on the market, undercutting competition like the Skoda Yeti and Nissan Qashqai, and for the cheap price, you do get a surprising amount of kit. However, the Suzuki SX4 does fall short on a number of key areas, such as cargo space and the interior design. Ultimately, the little crossover SUV is a great choice if you’re looking for something cheap to get you offroad, but if you have the budget, you should opt for another car.

The Suzuki SX4 gets off to a relatively poor start with its engine. Base models will come equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, which produces 119 horsepower. This might not sound like much, and it isn’t! To get up to motorway speeds, you’ll really have to push the engine. It feels weak and unrefined, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the engine warning light came on at high speeds because of how hard it has to work. Luckily, the small engine is pretty economical, so you’ll save some costs in the long term.

The overall ride of the SX4 is nothing short of average. The suspension is good at soaking up the bigger bumps in the road but does fail to keep you comfortable over tougher terrain. And whilst the steering is accurate, there’s a massive amount of body lean in corners.

The interior of the car is also disappointing. The cabin feels very cheap, as low-quality plastics have been used all round. These will come off easily, making the whole thing feel insecure and unsteady. There’s also a pitiful amount of cargo space and legroom for passengers.
