About the B-Class

The Mercedes-Benz B-Class has been around since 2005, and is marketed currently as an “executive MPV,” and a larger alternative to the smaller A-Class models. The B-Class isn’t just physically larger than the A-Class, but also features larger engines. It has been a consistently popular model since its launch, selling a million units between its launch in 2005 and a short time into its second generation in 2013.

The B-Class has been produced across 3 model generations so far, the first running from 2005 to 2011, the second from 2011 to 2019, and the current third-generation from 2019 to the present day. The latest model was launched at the Paris Motor Show in 2018, and featured a number of key design changes to the front and sides to make it more aesthetically pleasing to consumers who are increasingly mindful about how cars look, especially in the MPV class.

In true Mercedes fashion, the latest B-Class models brought many new technologies over from the pioneering big-sister flagship sedan, the S-Class. These included new infotainment options including a 10.25-inch infotainment display in higher trims, and a pair of these screens in the top-level trim. It also received voice control, AR features, and an optional driver head-up display.

Although there was meant to be an all-electric variant, it was eventually scrapped in favor of a plug-in hybrid model instead, which operates with a 10.9-kWh battery. The main plus of this plug-in hybrid is that it didn’t come with the trade-off of no DC charging as many PHEVs do. The B-Class PHEV can support DC fast charging, making an en route charge on the motorway more than feasible.

Since the B-Class has been focused on the European market, the powertrain options have mostly favored efficiency rather than raw power. The largest displacement offered was a diesel inline-4 model at 2.2L, which delivered 168-hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 2.0L inline-4 gasoline option was more powerful, however, at 208-hp.
