About the GLA

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-class is the smallest class of luxury crossover SUV models in their varied range. As the name indicates, the “GL” stands for “Gelandewagen” (off-road vehicle), while the A indicates that it is the smallest of the range, as you might see with the A-Class, CLA and other Mercedes-Benz vehicles that include “A” in them in the same way.

The Mercedes GLA was launched back in 2013, and is currently in its second generation, which was launched in 2019. Like most models within the smaller Mercedes-Benz range, the GLA runs on a series of 4-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines as the main component of the powertrain. They’re all either FWD or AWD, the latter being indicated by the presence of Mercedes’ own “4MATIC” badging to indicate its AWD technology.

True to form, Mercedes-Benz loved to discuss not just the luxury and a high level of design of its subcompact crossover, but also how aerodynamic it was. They achieved a drag coefficient of just 0.29, one they claimed was the best of its class. They were also very proud to announce the presence of cutting-edge suspension, and electric power steering.

The arrival of the second generation models in 2020 brought a plug-in hybrid model launched in March 2020, and also a new full-electric offering, the Mercedes EQA. While many new generations tend to enlarge, the second-generation GLA actually made the existing model slightly smaller, but taller (4.5 inches more headroom) and with a 1.2-inch longer wheelbase, and a ground clearance increased by about a third of an inch to 5.6 inches.

The new GLA was also brought more in line technologically with its sibling models in the Mercedes range, including getting a free-standing digital infotainment display, a color HUD, and the latest version of the MBUX infotainment system with “hey, Mercedes” voice commands.
