About the Touareg

In VW’s now eclectic SUV range, the Touareg is now one of the most long-standing models. It stands as a large-size, premium-level SUV offering great interior space, practicality and dependable systems. Those who buy it for those features are never disappointed, but the fact is that the Touareg continues to be outclassed in terms of luxury in the face of stiff competition from fellow VW family members like Audi, as well as non-VW SUVs like the BMW X-Series models.

There is a baseline SEL model, but if you really want to get the most out of the VW Touareg, it’s necessary to upgrade to a higher trim level like the R-Line and above. The standard powertrain is a decent 3.0L gasoline or diesel engine. The gasoline unit generates 335-hp and is paired with an advanced VW 8-speed Auto Tiptronic transmission.

Like other VW SUVs in this segment, the Touareg doesn’t offer the plushest interior design, but it’s comfortable enough and features signature VW clean lines and solid craftsmanship. There are lots of soft-touch materials and an absolute minimum of cheap plastic. It also offers a large central touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital driver display, and up to 28.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats up.

So, the Touareg is sleek and practical, and the powerful 3.0L engines help to deliver a very solid performance with smooth, quiet engine activity contributing to a fairly comfortable drive. There is also a plug-in hybrid version that adds an electric motor and up to 30 miles on electric power only, which is very strong for PHEVs in this class.

In size and scale, the Touareg easily competes with other larger SUV models in its class such as the Hyundai Kona and the Mazda CX-30. Its appeal falls down when it comes to those who want their SUV interior to go that extra mile with added luxury features and extras that VW are just not offering in this model.
