About the Rapid

The Skoda Rapid is a range of family cars created for select markets in Europe, China, and Russia. As a marque, Rapid actually has quite a long history with Skoda going back almost 100 years. Buyers can choose the Skoda Rapid in one of 3 forms depending on where they are. There’s a 4-door sedan model, a 5-door liftback, and a 5-door hatchback.

It was first launched in 2012, and while production in the Czech Republic ended in 2019, it continues in both Russia and China. While the model has been facelifted in different locations, it hasn’t made any generational shift to a second-generation model since its initial launch. Both the Chinese and Russian variants of the Skoda Rapid have actually been facelifted at different times and in different ways.

The success of the Skoda Rapid has endured for several reasons, the first being the various forms that it has been made into, including the still popular Skoda Rapid Spaceback (5-door hatchback version) and the 5-door liftback which serves as a top choice for families needing space and utility, but who can’t go for a full-size sedan or an SUV.

Another key to its success has been its safety record. It was tested back in 2012 by Euro NCAP, and achieved a much-envied 5-start score, with high individual scores in every area. The Skoda Rapid is also closely related to the Russian VW Polo, and the SEAT Toledo, too, but that’s not surprising as they’re all corporate brand cousins.

For gasoline engines, Skoda has offered a number of different engine options, from 1.0L to 1.4L. The most powerful gasoline powertrain could deliver 123-hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, managing 0-60 mph in 9 seconds. Those preferring a turbo diesel could get a 1.6L powertrain delivering 113-hp and 184 lb-ft of torque.
